A brief history of the Soho Loop of the New Main Line (BCN)

Canal Details
Canal length : 1.2 miles
Width : 7ft ins

The Soho Loop is 1.2 mile section of the BCN Old Main Line canal. Built in the eighteenth-century and completed in 1769. The New Main Line canal was built in 1827 to improve travel times between the centre of Birmingham and Tipton, bypassing much of the Old Main Line canal for through traffic.

The Soho Loop was bypassed by a straight 0.75 mile section of the New BCN Main Line canal but remained connected to the main canal system and continued to provide access for all of the existing factories and wharfs.
