The original plan for the Ellesmere Canal was to link the River Mersey with the River Severn. The canal would start at Ellsmere Port (originally Netherpool) and end in Shrewsbury. The route would use part of the existing Chester Canal and the River Dee at Chester.

The project was started in 1795 but was never completed. However, several major elements of the project were completed including the famous aqueducts at Pontcysyllte and Chirk as well as the Chirk Tunnel.
