The Coventry Canal Company was formed in 1768. The construction took just over 20 years and the complete line finally opened in 1790. The canal was profitable, shipping coal north via the Trent & Mersey Canal and south via the Oxford Canal. In fact, commercial traffic continued to flow north of Nuneation until 1960.
