A brief history of the River Thames

The River Thames runs for 215 miles from it's source at Thames Head in Gloucestershire to the Thames Estuary where it flows into the North Sea. The river is tidal as far as Tedington Lock. There are a total of 45 locks on the upper reaches of the Thames.

2 canals flow into the River Thames. The Kennet and Avon canal connected Bristol and Bath to London and the Oxford canal connected the Midlands to London via Oxford.
