The Lancaster Canal runs from Preston toTewitfield, a length of 42 miles. The canal was finished in1826 taking 34 years to construct.

In 1813 work on the canal north of Tewitfield was started to extend the canal to Kendal. This section of the canal was completed 1819. Unfortunately, much of this section is now un-navigable.
